Welcome

The Boycott

I know. It seems almost impossible to believe that the religious right could find a reason to turn on Mickey Mouse and his friends. But nevertheless, they have. This appears to be an exclusively American idea, nowhere else in the world seems to have joined in. In fact, few people in America have joined in. I like Americans. Even Southern Baptists. I like anyone who makes me laugh.

Why have a small minority of a group of people decided to kick Mickey and his Disney Family? OK, I'll tell you what I've picked out from the rantings. It was difficult discover the problem whilst searching through a quagmire of propaganda. You see, I am a Disney person. Disney people aren't used to negative comment. Certainly not negative comment about fellow human beings. Anyway, here's a list of the things that have upset this religious group.
  • Disney offers its gay and lesbian employees and their partners the same insurance benefits that it offers to its straight married employees and their partners. It treats them as equal. Apparently the Bible says (according to the Southern Baptists) that human beings should not treat each other as equals. They must have a different Bible to mine.
  • The Southern Baptists insist that Disney's Pocahontas is sinful because, even though it's just a cartoon (not a sermon), in the movie Pocahontas did not convert to Christianity. Mmmm. That would have made for a very exciting movie. Not.
  • In the movie " Bedknobs and Broomsticks" , Southern Baptists believe that children were " exposed to witchcraft" because Angela Lansbury could levitate things.
  • Disney own ABC Television, who made the hysterical TV series " Ellen" . Ellen came out as a lesbian and the boycotters rubbed their hands with glee. Even though this is a fictional TV series. Sure, Ellen Degeneres is a lesbian. So? And?
  • The Leader of the Southern Baptists also said " Hollywood and the theater world is heavily influenced by Jewish People" ..." These people are overtly hostile to the Christian faith." Jewish people, gays, lesbians and Angela Lansbury. Whatever next?

Obviously I've simplified the reasons for this failing boycott, but I'm sure you don't want to read a list of feeble excuses. Excuses which are supposed to inspire you not to buy anything at Disney stores, visit a Disney Theme Park, or watch ABC or the Disney channel, or patronise any of the hundreds of other Disney companies.

Disney should not be made to suffer for stating that all human beings are of equal value. This is a particularly moral line of thought, as such, it must therefore be correct. America's Southern Baptists believe The Walt Disney Company to be immoral because it refuses to give in to bigotry and believes, rightly, that families who love one another unconditionally deserve support.

And let's not forget, Disney are the world's foremost provider of quality entertainment. I can think of no other company whose contribution to society and to our happiness (even if it is just while we're in a Disney Park or watching a Disney cartoon) has been greater. Try telling the terminally sick kids who have their Disney dreams made a reality by the Make A Wish Foundation that Mickey and Minnie are partners in crime.

As you already know, a real 'Disney person' will not speak negatively about the Southern Baptists, or their associates like The American Family Association. However, if you've read this far, you will no doubt realise by now that these groups have their own downfall in their own hands. On the surface it's laughable. At a deeper level, it's dangerous. In the end, we all have the choice. We bring up our kids as homophobic petty racists, or we bring up our children properly. I know which side I'm on.

Update:  The Southern Baptists called off their boycott a couple of years ago, and I've had had countless emails from Southern Baptists asking me to remove this page as they feel it is no longer relevant.  Well, it is relevant.  It's worth knowing who your friends really are, and to do that, you need to have all the information you can find.  Even though the boycott is now history, Southern Baptists will still (generally) tell you that they believe that people who don't share the same beliefs as them (non-Christians, gays, lesbians, etc.) are "lesser" people than those who do share their beliefs.  It seems that "diversity" is still not really understood by some sections of the community.  Until it is, this page is staying!
